It’s Special Because It’s Live
On my way to the subway station a guy in a white shirt said: “Saw Lady!” He said he’s been seeing my flyers advertising the Musical Saw Festival or my CD for years, on the billboard at the park. He has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years.
It never ceases to amaze me that people recognize me.
A nice, older gentleman volunteered to help me bring my busking gear up the subway station’s stairs and said: “Good luck!”
Another musician was lugging his bass up the subway stairs behind me. “The things musicians have to do”, I said to him at the top of the stairs.
An MTA worker walked with me on the platform. “Are you still installing the new speakers on the platform?” I asked. He confirmed it.
Saw Lady: “Is it for announcements or also for playing canned music?”
MTA worker: “For now it’s only for announcements. May be someday the MTA will agree to pump music through them”.
Saw Lady: “I hope not – that will interfere with what we, subway musicians, do”.
MTA worker: “No – what you do is special because it’s live”.
I enjoyed your article. You tell readers what most people don’t know about New York-it really is several little neighborhoods linked together, each having the same sense of community as a small town.
I certainly hope they don’t play muzak through those speakers. You guys down under have a lot of talent.

My boyfriend videoed you in the subway playing in july. I have tried to play the saw and got discouraged but now I am interested again. I am sure you’ve herd this before but I love your saw grip set up!
