Playing a Saw in the Subways Makes NYC Feel Like Such a Small Neighborhood
As I arrived at the Music Under New York spot at Union Square, it was 11:50am and there were people changing the ads on the walls of the station. They were peeling off the existing ads and plastering new ads which appeared to be for the NYC marathon. They just finished doing the ad on one side of our spot and the guy dealing with the ad on the other side of our MUNY spot was very nice – he actually apologized for being in my way…!
An Andean pan-flute player was at the spot but he wasn’t performing – he was reading a newspaper… He told me that he had been there since 10am. He played before, and now he is waiting for his partner.
A group of police officers were huddles around their captain (the officers wear blue shirts while the captain wears a white shirt).
At 12:30 the friendly blond blind lady walked by.
At 12:35 the guy who always claps his hands for me came to say ‘hi’. He told me he is on his way to pick up a delivery.
A lady told me that she is a neighbor of Matt, the journalism student who interviewed me a few days ago. She told me they had a block party and Matt was telling everybody about how he interviwed me.
Later on I got an e-mail from Matt saying: “I hear you ran into my landlord Vicky the other day — it confirms what you were saying in our conversation: playing a saw in the subways makes NYC feel like such a small neighborhood!”
A guy wearing a Hawaiian shirt and straw hat danced when I played the theme of “Dr. Zhivago”.
At 3:20 my hurting hand indicated it was time I called it a day.
What a wonderful blog!
The musical saw at the London bass shop was ridiculous because no one had really any sort of clue how to play it…One man eventually got a sound out of it- but mostly it was amusing fumblings.
I listened to a couple of tracks on CD baby- you’re phenomenal!
